Is the Yamaha YPT310 Keyboard a decent keyboard for a beginner?

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

I’m really curious because I want to learn, but I’m not ready to commit to a really expensive keyboard or piano or anything.
Should I buy this?

Answer to your question: That is a pretty good keyboard to start off with. It has an important thing that i will describe below. I think you should buy this keyboard. Its cheap, and has the basic things you will need to start playing. Heres some advice and other stuff you should know about piano:

Investing in a cheap one is a good way to start. But there are a few things that you should consider having. I don’t know if you have taken piano classes, or talked to a pianist, but you should look for a keyboard that has "weighted keys". The one you posted here has weighted keys, so "yamaha ypt310 is perfect for you. Most acoustic pianos and some electric ones have weighted keys. This is important in being able to play songs with emotions and feelings because you can control how loud each key sounds by pressing it with certain force. Harder you press=louder. softer you press=softer. Weighted keys also helps strengthen your fingers. Piano requires you to build up your finger muscles.

And you must be willing to practice everyday if you want to become more advance because thats the only way you will strengthen all your fingers. Your pinky will be the weakest finger, and it needs a lot of training. Remember to keep your fingers curved, sit straight, and keep your feet flat. If u get your keyboard, find a place with the perfect height for you, and a chair that fits with the table. Don’t play on the floor. Do research on how far you should be from your keyboard and what height it should be placed according to your height. Playing piano requires you to have a good posture and keep your fingers curved. It is REALLY important to keep your fingers curved from the start. It is absolutely necessary to form this good habit from the beginning, or it will be really hard to change later. Curving your fingers is a must and i cant stop telling you this, so do it right from the beginning. Go do research on how (the position) your fingers should be curved. your pinky will feel like jello in that position, but keep playing that way and eventually you will strengthen it. Have fun, and another thing.

IF you take lessons, your teacher might teach you all these songs you hate. THen your teacher will tell you to practice them everyday. And you might not want to because you hate them so much and eventaully you will stop. Dont do that. Instead, find some songs you like and ask your teacher to teach you. Play stuff that you like to play. But you will eventaully have to play some songs that you hate because certain songs require certain finger techniques needed to manuever the keyboard over a wide range of keys. An acoustic piano has 88 keys i think. And thats a lot to be playing with 10 fingers, so you’ll learn different genres and types of songs to be able to play all 88 keys. Have fun, and piano is the best thing in the world.
