Don’t Move A Piano Till You Read This

How do you move a piano? Really cautiously.

Okay, I’m becoming a small sarcastic, but moving a piano is a serious endeavor.

I’m a large advocate of hiring a skilled mover to move a piano. Pianos are heavy and it’s easy to damage a piano while moving it. I’m speaking from encounter. I very own a Kimball piano my parents bought brand new for me when I was a child. That piano was a massive deal to me after acquiring played on an old “clunker” of a piano for numerous years. I played that new piano every day.

When I got married it was time to move the piano to my very own residence. My husband and his brothers moved it themselves. It wasn’t an simple job even with the moving dolly they employed (pianos weigh many hundred pounds – grand pianos can weigh 1,500 pounds). The amateur move of my piano resulted in both of the piano legs becoming damaged (a typical occurrence when men and women move a piano themselves) and some unplanned internal perform (some pins necessary repair and a string broke). I really should have hired a piano mover. Then I wouldn’t have had those troubles, but my husband and I thought we would save cash by doing it ourselves. It was a lesson I should have remembered, but I was foolish a second time.

A handful of years ago my husband and I constructed a new property. When it came time to move the piano once again, my husband was reluctant to employ a person to move it professionally due to the fact our pocketbook was already feeling empty from the expense of developing the home (he referred to as our new residence a “cash-sucking black hole.”) In his thoughts, moving it wasn’t a big deal. Our new home was much less than two miles from our old 1 and he had a dolly, a trailer, and a brother who was prepared to assist him.

Anything went okay till my husband turned into the driveway of our new residence. The sharpness of the turn strained the ropes holding the piano on the trailer and they broke. The piano tipped more than and sustained a lot of harm (the entire “guts” of the piano are ruined and the situation is chipped and scratched). I haven’t had it fixed but, but I have gotten an estimate. It’s going to take a lot of time and funds to fix the piano. It wants to be entirely rebuilt. Simply because of the labor involved, it would be more affordable to get a new piano than have it fixed, but the piano has a lot of sentimental value to me so I will have it fixed. This is why I say, “Employ a skilled!”

What does a professional piano mover do to ensure a secure and profitable move? With upright pianos, they almost always strap the piano on a skid known as a piano board. They also cover the piano with blankets to support safeguard it. The total bundle is then usually put on a dolly and taken to its destination. If methods are involved, the piano is taken off the dolly and slid up or down the actions on the piano board.

Moving a grand piano is a tiny more involved. The lid, lid hinges, pedal lyre, and leg on the straight side of the piano are generally all removed. The piano is then place on the piano board, on its side, with the straight side down. The other legs of the piano are then removed. The piano is then covered with blankets, strapped to the board, and place on a dolly.

Some movers do not like to move a piano up or down stairs. If it’s feasible, they favor to hoist it to the proper floor through a window that’s massive adequate to accommodate the piano.

So what do you do if you just want to move your piano from a single part of a space to one more? Initial, determine if it’s truly important to move it because there’s always the danger of damaging a piano even with a short move. Piano legs are the most probably thing to get damaged or broken.

Be extremely careful to stay away from putting too significantly weight on the legs. Get a couple of strong people to aid if the piano is an upright and get at least 5 men and women if it’s a grand piano. With an upright or spinet, tilt the piano back a little to take the pressure off the front legs, but be careful not to tip it back too far and tip it over. With a grand piano, lift the piano up sufficient to get the pressure off the legs prior to you try to move it. It’s not needed (and not advised) to lift the piano off the floor totally.

If you’re going to move a piano often, contemplate getting it fitted with particular casters that will enable you to move the piano relatively easily. Or, have the piano placed on a piano truck.

How you do you uncover a very good piano mover if you’ve made the decision to not try and move it yourself? My suggestion is that you call your local piano retailer and ask them for recommendations. They need to be in a position to give you the name or names of trustworthy movers in your region.

Okay, so you’ve made the decision you are absolutely going to move your piano and you’ve decided on a approach. Now you have to figure out exactly where you are going to put the piano. Where should it go?

Try to place your piano in an region of a space exactly where there are little or no drafts, exactly where it is out of direct sunlight, and where the temperature and humidity are stable. This is because pianos are sensitive to humidity and temperature. Lots of temperature and humidity swings trigger a piano to go out of tune quicker than typical, can harm the wood case, and if they are severe they can even at some point trigger structural failure.

Don’t place your piano over or subsequent to a heat vent and prevent putting it close to a fireplace. Do not place in front of a window simply because that’s normally a drafty location as nicely as a single with direct sunlight. Attempt to find a room in your home or apartment that has consistently stable temperature and humidity. That is the finest room for your piano.

If you can’t find a place in your apartment or residence that is out of direct sunlight, free of drafts, and doesn’t have huge temperature swings, you may well want to take into account acquiring a climate control program installed in your piano.

Moving and putting your piano correctly will assist ensure you have a beautiful instrument to play for a extended time rather than getting what I now own – an oversized paperweight that desires to be dusted.

Digital Piano Or Upright Piano: Which One Is Better?

Friday, July 16th, 2010

Many people have the opinion that digital pianos do not sound like original pianos, while some people say about the upright piano that they take too much space in a room. You will find this kind of conflict about electric pianos and upright pianos very off and on. This conflict is a never-ending one and will also never be solved.

People have their personal preferences. Some like the older style and old quality of the music in pianos while some love the new technologies used in the modern day digital piano. The electric piano is not a very old innovation. It has been around for about 20 years now. But they are the most widely used musical instruments today.

When the digital piano was first introduced, it was like a blunder. The keys used on the keyboard were extremely light and spongy and the quality of the piano as well as the music was nowhere near the real piano. The sound of these early pianos was too bright and the sampling was quite awful. All these points were working against this new revolution.

These early pianos did not feel right at all. The sweetness as well as the sharpness of the original piano was missing out somewhere. The manufacturers of the digital piano had to work really hard to bring it to a stage when it could be something like an original piano.
The look of these pianos was also not a good one. It had quite an ugly look. The cases looked liked cheap plastic and it was very difficult to match it with any other furniture in the home. But today digital pianos have become a sensation. Today new models of electric pianos are coming out every two to three years. Today there are many advantages of a digital piano over an upright piano. They have a lot more features and they are portable so they can be easily moved and of course, they sound fantastic.
